System for Land-based Emissions Estimation in Kenya (SLEEK)

The Mullion Group provided program management and technical capability and support to the Clinton Foundation as it worked with the Government of Kenya to develop and implement the System for Land Based Emissions Estimation in Kenya (SLEEK). This supports the Government of Kenya’s commitment to develop effective policies to reduce emissions as well as benefit from international programs to reduce emissions through stopping deforestation or implementing clean growth policies.

The SLEEK is a national level system designed to comprehensively account for greenhouse gas emissions from land-based activities. It uses both remote sensing data to detect landcover change over time, and historical data to parameterise models. Both types of data feed the Full Lands Integration Tool (FLINT), which attributes and calculates emissions from land use change. The system is intended to be a Tier 3, Approach 3 system enabling Kenya to fulfil both reporting obligations to the UNFCCC and to use a data-driven approach to decision-making and planning.
